On August 30th, IUCAE held the 3rd Session of Empowering Rostrum for Innovation and Development, attracting over 100 experts, scholars, teachers and students from the IUCAE universities to participate online and offline. Prof. Yang Daojian, Vice President of Jiangsu University(JSU), also attended.
The Rostrum was organized by the IUCAE (Secretariat) and hosted by Jiangsu University’s School of Environmental and Safety Engineering (affiliated by Biomass Energy Research Institute and Environmental Health and Ecological Safety Research Institute), and presided over by Professor Sun Jianzhong, Executive Secretary General of the IUCAE. The Rostrum focused on China’s dual carbon goals and sustainable development, under the theme of “waste recycling as the starting point of low-carbon agriculture”.
Professor Wang Xiulun, Assistant President of Mie University in Japan, gave a report titled “Developing Environmentally Friendly and Degradable Biobased Materials Using Crop Stalks”, on such topics as renewable biomass resources replacing petrochemical resources, reducing carbon emissions, and circular economy. He introduced innovative environmental protection technologies to produce degradable bio-based panels with excellent performance by using straw, as well as application and promotion prospects of bio-based panels in agricultural film, packaging, food and so on.
Researcher Zhang Yiheng, Director of Key Laboratory of Engineering Biology for Low-Carbon Manufacturing, Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences gave a report titled “Agricultural Industrialization PLUS: Holding China’s Rice Bowl with Disruptive Technologies” and focused on straw-based grain production and CO2 based grain production to address the challenges brought by food security and the dual carbon goals. He presented an out-of-the-box solution involving the highly efficient biosynthesis of artificial starch and microbial proteins from available and abundant agricultural residue as new feed and food sources, which is expected to truly help the Chinese people to hold tight the rice bowl.
Researcher Yong Yangchun, Dean of Biofuels Institute of Jiangsu University, gave a report titled “Electric microorganisms drive low-carbon agricultural carbon/nitrogen cycling”, focusing on the current two key agricultural carbon emissions: carbon cycle and nitrogen cycle. He introduced their processes, proposed the mechanism and innovative strategy to strengthen electron transfer processes at the interface of electric energy microorganisms, and contributed to the development of efficient low-carbon biological agriculture driven by renewable electricity.
Prof. Yang Daojian and Dean Du Daolin of JSU’s School of Environmental and Safety Engineering, awarded three experts certificates. Teachers and students from JSU’s School of Environmental and Safety Engineering, School of Agricultural Engineering, School of Energy and Power Engineering, School of Food and Biological Engineering, and Institute for Energy Research attended on-site.
Jiangsu University and Mie University entered into an agreement to build an international joint research center on high value utilization of agricultural waste biomass. Prof. Yang Daojian and Prof. Wang Xiulun signed the agreement on behalf of both universities and launched the joint research center.
